Lime-Scented Blueberry-Blackberry Grunt

My oven is still broken. It’s such a lost cause that the repair man advised us to get a new one.
What’s irritating is that the burners and broiler work perfectly.
What’s even more irritating is that all I want to do is use the oven. I should be making crumbles! Baking cupcakes! Making ribs! Crisping bread! Roasting tomatoes!
Instead, I have been reduced to using every small appliance that I own…with the exception of the rice cooker. And even that’s starting to look good.
Green Bean Salad with Grilled Red Onions

Oh, green beans. I have such a love-hate relationship with you.
When my mother dry fries you fresh and diced or even sautes you French cut and frozen, you are so so delectable.
However, when I have had you prepared ANY other way, I want to renounce you. Condemn you. Curse you.
What is with the two-facedness, Janus?
The (apparently inherent) temperamental nature of green beans made me initially ambivalent about this recipe. But I was seduced (yet again) by their towering mounds at the farmers market. I figured that, at the very worst, I could take them to a potluck and be rid of them once and for all.
I’m ashamed to admit that I fell prey to the lure of green beans once last month. The result: an overcooked quivering rubbery mess. Ugh, I shudder to remember it. Damn you, green beans! (see! with the cursing)
This time had to be better. HAD to be.

Grilled Buttermilk Chicken with Old Bay Seasoning

I grew up in Maryland, where Old Bay seasoning abounds. Abounds!
When I went to my local grocery store, I knew that they had to have Old Bay seasoning. Because, you see, Old Bay abounds!
Not in California.
In Maryland, Old Bay is in everything. On crabs. On shrimp. On fish. In fried chicken. On corn. On French fries. In potato salad. In potato chips. On popcorn. On deviled eggs. Sometimes even in Bloody Marys.
