The bad news is that I have no new recipe for you.
The good news is that I’m back. Four and a half months have gone by so quickly — I have thought of you often.
I wanted my return to be triumphant, but it’s gotten to the point when it’s more important that I post something…anything. Even if it is this very lame post.
Upside-down Caramel Pear Muffins

Even though we’re enjoying a late Indian summer (mind you, I’m not complaining), I can’t help but be inspired by autumn cooking. Specifically fall baking.
This is the one time of year I miss living on the East Coast. Unlike apple picking and cider, fall traditions in California don’t resonate. As much as I like pomegranates and persimmons, they don’t scream “autumn” to me. On the other hand, California does brag a range of apple varietals that I’ve never seen back east.

I am obsessed with food trucks.
Look, this should come as no surprise. I am routinely obsessed. I flit from interest to interest like moths to a flame. Or something like that.
But this obsession feels real. Lasting. And maybe even threatening. At least to my belly.
It started so innocently with a small crush on Mobowl, but it quickly escalated. Within weeks, I had announced to one and all that Wednesdays (a.k.a. Mobowl days) were the best day of the week. Every Wednesday, I lined up for my weekly dose of Mobowl. And, every Wednesday, I ate too much and cursed the dark forces that make food taste so very good.
Last Friday, I descended further into the madness; I went to the food truck mecca: Off the Grid.

Have I ever mentioned my preserve-of-the-month club?
If you are Facebook friends with me (I almost said “friends in real life,” as if that is what being a “Facebook friend” means), I went through a week-long period during which it was all I talked about. It was all “DM if you want to be in my preserve-of-the-month club.” And “starting a preserve-of-the-month club for six months. Contact me for details.” It’s nauseating how some people do nothing about talk about themselves. Positively sickening.
Ok, back to me. I decided to start a preserve-of-the-month club for people I know for a six-month period. It’s an experiment to see if I could actually survive making one preserve a month, particularly during the harsh lean winter months. Would it be all marmalades and candied citrus peels? Could anyone be reasonably expected to survive this sugar apocalypse?
Fudgy Chocolate Brownies

I have a confession to make: I don’t like chocolate.
No, don’t go…I’m not crazy. Hear me out.
I do think chocolate is ok. It’s good enough, but I’m never going to pick a molten chocolate cake over a lemon tart. And I usually need my chocolate cut by vanilla or caramel. I just don’t buy into the whole cult of chocolate.
