Happy 100th birthday, Julia! Without her, there couldn’t have been Martha or the Food Network.

Do you think that Julia Child in real life was really as charming as portrayed by Meryl Streep in the movie?

I like to imagine so. I admire the fictional Child’s zest for life, her frank delight in well-prepared food, and her supportive, loving relationship with her husband. And her work ethic.

I didn’t know much about Julia Child when she was actually on TV. French cooking held no interest — when we ate out, I was all American, all the way. Also, I was about 5 and spent my hours watching Sesame Street and The Electric Company.

Pins of the week: S’mores

Posted on 10 August 2012 | Comments Off on Pins of the week: S’mores

Happy National S’mores Day! I didn’t realize that it was a real holiday until yesterday. Now, I’m thoroughly flummoxed that I don’t have the day off to celebrate.

To be honest, I don’t like traditional s’mores. There’s something distasteful about the texture of a marshmallow. But I’ll take marshmallow fluff any day.

  • This s’mores ice cream from the Brown Eyed Baker is killing me. Literally killing me. As in, I may need to make this ice cream this weekend and then eat it all myself.
  • I was hooked by marshmallow vodka. Then My Baking Addiction went and made s’mores truffles with it. It’s so wrong it’s right.
  • S’mores hand pies? They may be too pretty to eat. But not really.
  • These s’mores cupcakes with graham cracker buttercream are plain madness. I would be happy with the buttercream alone.
  • I am going to pretend that s’mores caramel popcorn is good for me. Popcorn is a whole grain…never mind all the other stuff.

Roasted Peaches with Vanilla Wafer, Almond, and Brown Sugar Crumble

Roasted peaches with vanilla wafer, almond, and brown sugar crumble

I keep starting to write melancholy blog posts. The insufferable heat and the looming threat of dehydration are affecting my disposition.

Today, I was going to whine about how much I miss my old kitchen. I miss the generous space. I miss the not-blue countertops. I miss the not-tin backsplash that didn’t reflect light everywhere.

In the rental kitchen, I have to color correct my photos. (oh no) Sometimes, the light comes in too strongly from the west-facing window so I have to diffuse the light. (boo hoo) The countertops don’t hold enough so sometimes I have to overflow to the dining table. (wah)

The last is particularly pressing when you’re blanching, peeling, pitting, and slicing 20 pounds of peaches. I did it again; I bought another 20-pound box of fruit.

How did this happen? Again?
